Swinging the compass

Hey all,
I know for a compass swing it's supposed to be tail level, engine running. Anybody swing the compass with the engine off? I'm wondering if that has much effect with our weak electric systems.

Seems easy enough to check. Next time you are at the airport find an empty taxi space and compare the compass readings facing various directions with the engine on and off while sitting in the cockpit You will need an actual compass rose location at the airport to fill out the compass deviation card but just checking on the ramp informally will tell you if the engine has any affect.

If you have an EFIS with an AHRS and did the calibration procedure I wouldn’t worry about a compass rose, use that for your reference.

The MFD is a Braüniger Alpha MFD. No navigation ability.

Mostly I use my phone or tablet to navigate. I'm looking for a backup.

I have a very small (two systems) amount of experience with EFIS compass swinging - Both required all four cardinal points to be entered - WHY?
Surely the electronic gizmo can work out 45, 90 & 270 degrees from one set direction?
Okay, do one additional cardinal point, as a check - should be enough.
Anyone like to explain? (simple language please)
