Good evening!

Mike F (Waiex owner here near Columbus) and I have been chatting off line for about a month now and he just informed me of this forum.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Scott M and I have a problem. I have been following Sonex ever since I obtained my Private Pilot license in 2000. I always wanted to build an experimental kit plane but my wife thought it was too risky. She joked that if I could build a car then we could discuss it and go from there! Over the last 10 years I have successfully completed two kit cars, one of which was an award winning Factory Five 1965 Cobra replica.

Well I am getting back into aviation after a longer than expected hiatus and my wife and I recently made the trek to Oshkosh and visited Sonex's factory and placed the order for a Complete Airframe Kit. We were very impressed with the factory and quality of the kit and options to suit my needs.

I should be receiving my airframe kit before the end of the month!

Sonex Plans #1629
Tri-Gear
Dual Controls (with plan to do the lowered seat)
AeroVee 2.1 engine ( with Turbo?)

I will figure out the avionics when I am ready but like the concept of a glass panel with moving map GPS.

Looking forward to starting this long awaited project and gaining help and insight from those who have made this trek before me!

Glad you found the forum board here Scott! You'll find a lot of great people on this website, and in the Sonex community as well. I can't wait for you to get started on your kit! I do have to admit a little bit of jealousy since your kit will be the matched hole version, while lots of us didn't have that luxury! You'll be able to build your kit much faster than I did.

Keep us up to date on when you get your kit. Are you going to start with the tail first?

Mike

Congrats on your kit purchase Scott! We probably bumped into each other at OSH.

Just as Mike said, feel free to reach out anytime. This is a great group and everyone is very helpful.

Well future Sonex #1629 has arrived (or landed?) as a series of 11 boxes, tubes and flat pallet.

Didn't take as many pictures as I did when my car arrived (probably because I was doing all the heavy lifting).

As Mike said, having fun (and sweating) doing the inventory.

Anybody know where the plans and manuals are boxed up, or does that get shipped separately?

Hmmm...the plans should be in their own box, maybe around 4" x 4" x 24". Sonex rolls them up and ships them in a box. Do you not see them? I'm a little surprised they didn't send them to you early. Have you opened all the boxes?

If you haven't seen them, I'd try to call them quick.

Scott, now that you are well into building your Sonex, how does the experience compare to building your Factory Five Cobra? I saw some pictures of your Cobra and it looks fantastic. I have been thinking about building a Cobra myself for quite some time as well. I have really enjoyed building my Sonex and am a little concerned about not having something to build after I get everything completely done on my Sonex. I am working on my upholstery and smoke system right now.

Your Sonex build looks great!

Holy thread resurrection Batman! When I was still a car guy I swore my next one would be a kit rather than a restoration. The cobra is cool. The treasurer from my old EAA chapter built one too, after he built his acro sport.

Other aspects of the builder's disease could probably warrant its own thread.

Edit: did you ever find your plans?
