Bryan, we were just discussing that yesterday - we are hoping to do one soon, likely at Clow...

Last Sunday was a fulfilling day. After a couple of weeks of hard work - putting in a lot of time during vacation and on weekends - I finally attached the forward fuselage to the aft fuselage.

This photo shows the fuselage with the forward half clecoed in and the firewall on, and the cross ties clamped temporarily in the wrong place for support.

Then I stood inside and made airplane noises.

I am now working to complete the rest of the forward fuselage but the cold here in Chicagoland has been brutal this week...

Keep building!! It's a step at a time and very satisfying to get to major milestones!!

Hi Robbie,

You're a little ahead of me, mind if I ask you a question? My workshop is pretty small, at least the indoor part. Plenty of "summer" room. How long is the fuselage at your stage, joined but no motor mount? Also, how long were the halves prior to joining?

Many thanks, Gordon

If you run out of room in your workshop, Gordon, just put it in your house. :D
Have a look at this Sonex story, Michael Jackson's "Where there's a will, there's a way":

Gordon

I will measure it and get back to you right away

And I want to add a special thanks for this recent achievement to my wife Brenda, and my friends Tony and Jim.

Tony is building and getting a free education in all things Sonex, and Jim made his first flight this past summer and is invaluable when it comes to advice.

Let's call it 14 feet 6 inches as is (no motor mount)

Hi Robbie,
Your fuselage is looking real good. I hope your weather improves. I am a weather wimp that is why I live in Phoenix in the winter.
I recently moved my project to the hangar. I am not working there in the mornings now because the temps are in the 40s.

Sounds like I'll need a bump-out, but I was already planning to enclose the porch for the wings so I'll just proceed with that plan.

Thanks for checking, Gordon

Sonex 1517 update -

Lower firewall is drilled and clecoed in place. Upper and lower cross ties are in.

Fuselage forward floor is also in.

Splice plates are drilled and clecoed.

Forward Z channel is in.

Lots of good progress and I am on a two week Christmas break - looking forward to lots of family time and Sonex building.

Hope all of you have a wonderful holiday!
